Ever feeling like reading something but not in the mood for any of the books on your TBR? Here are some book recommendations that can help with that, this is also good if you want to read books associated with the month.
Going into spring, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is a story about a quiet girl finding herself. When all her love letters get sent out, she has to pretend to be in a relationship with one of them to stop even worse things from happening. It’s a light-hearted coming of age story that is full of drama. Another book is Everything Everything written by Nicola Yoon, which is a story about a girl who has lived her whole life thinking that she is allergic to everything (hence the title). She lives a completely sheltered life until a new family moves next door and she meets the son. It is a coming-of-age story with deeper meaning in the actions of the characters. It is a beautiful book that I sped through and would be a great re-read. There are tons of wonderful short light-hearted stories that would be perfect to kill some time during the spring.
There are a ton of amazing summer books but a must-read for this section is definitely Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. It is a murder mystery/love story where the main character is a young girl whose family has all abandoned her to the marshes. She has to learn to survive by herself, and the descriptions of the marsh alone make you feel like you are right there with her. Another book series which is set in the summer is the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series written by Rick Riordan. The series follows a twelve-year-old son of the sea god as he fights monsters summer after summer at a summer for half-bloods. This book is mainly for middle schoolers but the characters have so much depth and are so relatable that you can’t help but love them. We Were Liars received a 2014 book award and is a perfect summer because it takes place on a private island. It is about a family who doesn't talk about their problems. The main characters are three cousins and one of the boy's other cousins who came as well. It is a romance and a mystery.
Autumn is definitely a great time for books based around the school such as the Harry Potter series. This follows a young boy who finds out that he is a wizard and then goes to Hogwarts; a school for witches and wizards. Another good book, The Night Circus, about a magical circus that travels around the world with no warning of leaving or arriving. It is an adult book of rivals to lovers and has a dark academic feel to it. Caraval is very similar to The Night Circus in that it talks mainly about what is real and what is fantasy. It is also a highly intense competition but also goes into myths and lore. The Secret History by Donna Tartt is a dark academic book set in a college in New England. It is also a murder mystery and is perfect to read under a tree with red leaves on the ground.
A good cosy Christmas book that you can settle down with in front of the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate is Home for the Holidays written by Heather Vogel Frederick. This is part of a six-book series that is focused on five girls as they journey through middle and high school. Another book is The Wolf Princess by Kathryn Constable. This book is set in Russia where a young girl is lost in a blizzard and then is rescued by a princess. This is a nice short book with elements of the Snow Queen myth in it and is another great read. If you feel like a mystery, then you should pick up The Clue at the Ski Jump by Caroline Keene. This book is part of the iconic series about Nancy Drew but is super easy to read without needing any context from a single one of her other books. It’s also an amazing book to get you into the skiing spirit.
