The countdown marks a fresh start
Swathed in dissipating firework smoke and cool midnight air, you’re halfway reborn
You believe change is catalyzed by a new calendar year
The uncertainty is electric and promising
Goals set and digitally tacked to your wall
To save more money, to learn a language, to fall in love
By June the hope will have faded
Your new self morphed into something old and bitter
Friends look like they’re moving forward
Their aspirations becoming reality, lists more complete than not
While your guilt grows and festers
Still, nothing seems to get done
The feeling of failure is overwhelming
Blinded by regret, you overlook the small things
A new friend, a funny video, a picturesque view
Mundanity always seems miniscule in hindsight
Never forget that life is not solely made of big ticket items
And that unmet goals don’t tarnish all you did accomplish
Drinking more water, finishing that book, learning something new
The year isn’t dictated by loss; it only gives you another chance to try again.
