Is the Language You're Learning Wrong?

Are you sure the language you're learning is right for you? With Howe Sound offering many different language programs and numerous resources online, how can you be sure that the language is right for you?

Whether it’s French, Spanish or Punjabi, there are so many choices for languages to learn in this modern age of computers. So which one should you choose? Canada is a very diverse country, so many languages tend to blossom. There's so many choices it can be hard to keep track of all the options.

French is spoken by over 7.2 people in Canada, and it’s a very popular choice for young students to learn, but the majority of the French speaking Canadians live on the other side of the country. So should you still learn the language? Of course! A widely spoken language like French will help you a great deal throughout your life, and also makes you eligible for government jobs in Canada.

Of course French is a good language to learn in the very colonised Canada, but how about less spoken languages like Spanish, Italian, and German? All of course have their place in Canada, but are they right for you?

Both Italian and Spanish have their roots in Latin, so if you have confidence in English or Latin these languages are widely spoken and might be easier to learn compared to Cantonese or Japanese. On the other side of the spectrum Germanic languages like German, Dutch and Yiddish would be harder to learn for a monolingual English speaker.

On the other side of the world Asian languages tend to blossom in the western hemisphere due to the large amount of immigration from asian countries. Both Chinese and Thai are both easy to learn and widely spoken all over Canada. While Korean and Japanese may be significantly harder to learn than the former two languages, they still have their uses due to the providence in modern day culture and entertainment.

In these modern ages, it can be hard to tell if you're learning the right things for the future, but learning a language doesn't have to be a concern if you keep your eyes on the road and your ear to the pavement.

Till' next time Howe Sound!
